The Recording Against Regimes was a series of cultural events presenting video art and films inspired by political changes in Poland in the 1980s, in Germany around the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and in Egypt since January 2011. Organised by ARCHiNOS in collaboration with the WRO Art Centre from Wroclaw, Poland, it was co-funded by the European Union as part of its annual Cultural Cooperation Programme in Egypt and additionally supported by the Embassies of Germany and Poland, as well as the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

It included the presentation of experimental video productions in the Darb 1718 Cultural Centre in Fustat in Cairo, screening of Polish, German and Egyptian films at the Centre’s open-air cinema, and a whole-day sessions of public panel discussions with Egyptian, German, and Polish authors of the presented works which was held in the historic al-Sinnari house.

If you are in Cairo, you can visit the installation at the Darb 1718 until 23 March 2013.

The project resulted in video art exhibition/installation, films screening and a public panel discussion in DARB 1718 Contemporary Art Center in March 2013.

Recorded images that are created as a personal or collective expression against political regimes during significant political changes are the counter-weight for those generated by the official media. The recorded document remains when the revolution is over and can often be interpreted not only by its content but also by the technology used in its production.

The geo-political context, the tools and their accessibility to artists and to the large public, and the means of diffusion have obviously changed through time and space. Videos and films included in the exhibition are considered a means to investigate the changing role and influence of visual technology on the recorded image and the different ways the moving image and its perception can be expressions of resistance.

Recorded images that are created as a personal or collective expression against political regimes during significant political changes are the counter-weight for those generated by the official media. The recorded document remains when the revolution is over and can often be interpreted not only by its content but also by the type of device used. On the more sophisticated level, video art and experimental cinema are continually using new approaches and forms of presentation. The viewer, shaken from accustomed visual habits, experiences new forms of perception and becomes more critical.
The geo-political context, the tools and their accessibility to artists and to the large public, and the means of diffusion have obviously changed through time and space. Videos and films included in the exhibition are not considered so much as a genre but more as a means to investigate the changing role and influence of visual technology and the different ways the moving image and its perception can be expressions of resistance.

Aswan in Upper Egypt is the site of a unique open-air museum presenting the outcome of the international symposiums that for the past eighteen years have brought together artists who create monumental sculptures from the famous Aswan granite, and expand the limits of sculpture into land art. The museum is still under construction and scheduled to open this year. Because of its direct relevance to the presentation work in Karanis in Fayum by ARCHiNOS Architecture (LINK), our staff made a study trip to Aswan this January.

European Union Delegation in Egypt responded to the events of the Arab Spring and its aftermath by launching a cultural programme “Revolution Meets the Arts.” As part of it, ARCHiNOS is preparing an exhibition/presentation/installation of experimental video work and documentary cinema generated by the momentous events in Poland in the 1980s, in Germany when the Berlin Wall fell, and in Egypt now. As protests and counter-protests are unfolding in front of ARCHiNOS headquarters in Heliopolis, and Egyptian visual artists react fervently to the new reality, it may be useful to step back and see how fateful events in the past inspired art. What are the similarities? What are the differences?

The site of ancient Karanis –now Kom Aushim at the edge of the Fayyum Oasis—reveals crucial information about life in Egypt in the Ptolemaic and Roman times. However, prof. Willeke Wendrich of the archaeological team of the URU Fayum Project (University of California, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and University of Auckland) is interested not just in excavations, but also in long-term preservation of historic material and its presentation to the public. With the funding from the United States Ambassadors Fund and in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of State for Antiquities, ARCHiNOS has begun work on conservation, protection, and presentation of statues and architectural details from the times of the Pharaohs that came to the site from rescue excavations in Kiman Faris (present day Fayum City).

In the morning of 19 October 2012 Muhammad Mahmud al-Shami, one of the longest and most involved ARCHiNOS collaborators, tragically died in a car accident.
Muhammad brought to our team much more than his worthy talents as an architect, engineer, and manager. We all valued his thoughtfulness, his even-headed judgment, his balanced opinion. We cherished his unwavering resolve in face of any difficulty, his optimism, the bright sense of humour that made his company so enjoyable. We were cheerily looking forward to his upcoming wedding.
He will be sorely missed.

Agnieszka Dobrowolska and Jaroslaw Dobrowolski of ARCHiNOS have just returned from South Africa, where they were invited to present the World heritage Site of Historic Cairo at the UNESCO conference “Living with World Heritage in Africa” on 26-29 September 2012 that marked the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention. The conference in Johannesburg brought together ministers and other decision-makers from countries all across the African continent, conservation practitioners, and representatives of communities that interact with World Heritage sites. The main focus of the forum—the need to balance heritage preservation with development benefiting local communities—is vitally relevant in Cairo, where ARCHiNOS is based.
