An Imperial Opening
19 January 2012
If our book encourages readers to visit the sabil-kuttab of Sultan Mustafa III and gain an appreciation of how so many diverse influences shaped its gracious architecture, it will have served its purpose – states the preface to the book The Sultan’s Fountain: An Imperial Story in Cairo, Istanbul, and Amsterdam. On 17 January 2012, this became true for a few hundred people. The official opening of the building after conservation, and the launch of the book published by the American University in Cairo Press packed the enchanting 18th-century Sinnari House in Cairo with guests: Egyptian officials and foreign diplomats, conservation professionals and students, architects, journalists, and a wider engaged audience. Visiting the recently conserved neighbouring Sultan’s Fountain was a highlight of the evening.
