Third ‘Sultan’s Fair’

18 March 2016

Sultan Qaitbey’s area within the “City of the Dead” in Cairo saw another Sultan’s Fair organised by ARCHiNOS on 18 March 2016. This was the first Sultan’s Fair held in the front courtyard of the maq’ad of Sultan Qaitbey restored by ARCHiNOS and in the square in front of it, where ARCHiNOS had carried out urban upgrading. A photographic exhibition “Mothers and Daughters” celebrated the upcoming Mother’s Day in Egypt. The fair brought together traditional craftsmen of the neighbourhood, many more craftspeople and artists from the Suq al-Fustat Project with very varied products, and artists who participated in a competition “Portray the Glory of the Sultan”.

The prizes in the competition, handed to the winning artists by the Head of the Fine Arts Sector of the Ministry of Culture Dr Khaled Sorour, were generously donated by the American University in Cairo Press, which also sold its books at the fair. Participatory events were organised for children, while a walking tour of the cemetery preceded the event, and attracted surprisingly numerous participants.
