Music Days at Sultan Qaitbey’s

11 – 13 July 2019

For three consecutive days: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11-13 July 2019, music of various kinds resounded in the area of Sultan Qaitbey’s maq‘ad.

In addition to three different bands performing, there was a dancing and choral performance of the children from the neighbourhood, the fruit of creative workshops in which they participated. In an exhibition that accompanied the event, various Egyptian artists displayed their work reflecting in visual terms on the world of musical sound.

On Thursday, 11 July, El Dor El Awal, an oriental jazz group, performed their music that blends virtuoso improvisations with Oriental harmonies.

On the same day, the art exhibition Silent  Rhythms Meet Shapes of Sound opened in the maq’ad of Sultan Qaitbey.

On Friday, 12 July, the Sudanese singer and drummer Asia Madani and her band played their music charged with beguiling rhythms and danced, joined by a good portion of the audience.

On Saturday, 13 July, the vocal group Klaxics presented classical and popular  compositions singing  a cappella, with human voices as their only instruments. Earlier that evening, there were dance and choral performances by the local children, fruit of the creative workshop carried out by the project.

The Beyond the Horizon events were organised in cooperation with our sister not-for-profit organisation, the Sultan Foundation, which operates the Maq‘ad of Sultan Qaitbey Centre, and receives funding from the Drosos Foundation.

The events were part of our programme Heritage for the Living in the “City of the Dead”, which is funded primarily by the European Union.
