ARCHiNOS Celebrates Scholarship

On Saturday, 16 November 2019 the distinguished scholar Prof István Ormos of Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest gave in the Maq‘ad of Sultan Qaitbey a lecture about some little-known aspects of the work of Max Herz Pasha. This outstanding conservation architect who was active in Egypt between 1880 and 1914 left indelible impact on the Islamic and Coptic monuments of Cairo, including our maq‘ad.

The event was dedicated to the memory of Prof George T. Scanlon (1925 – 2014), a great scholar of Islamic art history, an extraordinary educator for a long time associated with the American University in Cairo, a man of a larger-than-life personality and of a truly generous mind.

Before the lecture, Jaroslaw Dobrowolski of ARCHiNOS led a guided walking tour through the Eastern Cemetery.
