Art Exhibition by Farid Fadel

19 March 2022

On 19 – 31 March 2022, the renowned Egyptian artist Farid Fadel exhibited his paintings and drawings at the Maq‘ad of Sultan Qaitbey Cultural Hub (MASQ) in the “Desert of the Mamluks”. The exhibition of 40 works was entitled “Cairo, al-Mahrusa”, meaning Cairo the divinely protected. The stone walls of two mediaeval halls hosted paintings that captured the rich spirit of Cairo, a city that boasts great examples of Coptic, Islamic, Western and modern architecture. The artist is also inspired by the people of Cairo over the ages. The works depicted the spirit of Egypt’s ordinary people (and cats) around the Qaitbey neighbourhood of Cairo and their everyday cares and joys.
Wrote the artist in his commentary to the exhibition:
“This amazing city offers the thing and its opposite at the same time. It defies human reasoning, nevertheless it continues to survive and efficiently function by some divine protection; hence the title ‘El Mahrusa'”

The opening ceremony took place on Saturday, 19 March 2022 at the Maq‘ad of Sultan Qaitbey, and was attended by a numerous and very varied audience.

Social and cultural activities at the MASQ are carried out by ARCHiNOS and its sister not-for profit organisation the Sultan Foundation and are financed primarily by the Drosos Foundation and the European Union.
