Events in the Maq'ad of Sultan Qaitbey  cultural hub

Theatrical and dance performances

within the D-CAF contemporary art festival

31 March 2017

The Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF), taking place over three weeks  each spring at multiple locations in Cairo, is Egypt’s only international multi-disciplinary contemporary arts festival. This year, in its sixth edition,
D-CAF expanded beyond Downtown Cairo with a day of street performances staged in the Sultan Qaitbey area in the “City of the Dead”. They took place around the mediaeval building adapted by ARCHiNOS Architecture for a cultural hub that serves the local community as well as guests to the neighbourhood. Among the performers, many were people with disabilities, brilliantly showing that their abilities for creative artistic expression remain unimpaired.

Five dance, dance/theatrical, and puppet theatre performances were staged by Egyptian, Dutch, British, Irish, and Hungarian artists from the Misiconi, Croi Glan, and Stopgap Dance Companies, and the Budapest Marionettes. In the audience, art lovers from all over Cairo mixed with members of the local community of all ages.
